Hope Overflowing

I own a regular coffee pot with minimal bells and whistles. You know, the kind where you put the coffee grinds in the paper filter and fill the reservoir with water from the pot? There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t perform this all-important task and could probably do so in my sleep.

Yet on occasion, I’ve been known to place my coffee pot underneath the filtered water spout and let it start filling up while I multi-task. Of course, this never works out and before I know it the water has completely overflown the pot and is spilling out all over the kitchen counter. As I mop up the excess water, it occurs to me that the source of the water is always willing to give whatever the coffee pot can handle and more!

Now allow that image to stay with you while reading Romans 15:13:

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Did you catch the imagery? God is our source of hope. There is not a day that His hope will run dry on us. Never will we turn on that spout to find that He’s withholding His goodness from us. In fact, this verse tells us that He will fill us with His joy and peace as well as confident hope. He is a God of “more!”

However, the instruction is that we must TRUST in Him. We must believe that God is who He says He is, and that He wants to completely fill us to the point of overflowing. The result will be that because we trust in Him, it won’t be long before we start spilling out His joy and peace onto anyone standing near us.

May we be known as hope overflowing as we trust in our God of “more!”
